A bill designed to help keep uninsured motorists off the road in Texas has been OK’d by a House committee and is now before the full House.

Under House Bill 2573, the Texas Department of Public Safety would be allowed to verify drivers’ continued vehicle insurance, while still keeping their personal information confidential.

The bill was introduced on March 10 by Rep. Bill Callegari, R-Katy. Callegari said in a press release that one in five Texas drivers is uninsured.

According to a report by the Texas Department of Public Safety, uninsured motorists cost drivers in the state approximately $861 million in premiums.

A similar bill passed in the House in 2003; however, it failed to pass in the senate before an imposed deadline.
