Trucker Buddy classes experience the road through cyberspace
09/17/2003 - 1:32:22 pm

Trucker Buddy driver Jimmy Frost has a Web site for his class to view when he’s on the road. This gives him the chance to show his students what his job is like, and where he travels.

Jimmy is one of many drivers who are adept in using technology to teach children about the trucking industry.

Not all drivers are as skilled in using computers, but now they will be able to post photos and videos online through a site called TruckFLIX.com. TruckFLIX is an online driver recruiting company that offers streaming video technology in addition to other driver and carrier services.

Trucker Buddy drivers share their experiences with students through postcards, letters and e mails, sharing their days with an elementary class. The children respond with monthly letters, asking questions about the truck, the loads and other aspects of the driver’s lifestyle.

“By offering our participants the use of technology to add to the interactions between drivers and children, TruckFLIX.com will provide a way to enhance the learning experience,” Ellen Voie, executive director of Trucker Buddy International, said.

Students from around the world learn to appreciate the importance of the trucking industry through Trucker Buddy International, a non-profit pen pal program. Currently, there are more than 4,000 classes corresponding with professional drivers. Drivers and teachers can join the program by calling 1-800 MY BUDDY or visiting the organization’s Web site at www.truckerbuddy.org.

Trucker Buddy is dependent on corporate sponsors such as OOIDA and TruckFLIX to fund the program. Other sponsors MANCOMM, Transcore, ProTrucker & Over the Road magazines, American Graphics Group, Delphi, TMI-MultiMedia, Kenworth, Midnight Trucking Radio, Truckin’ Bozo, Mike Ryan Motorsports, TruckDriver.com, Wal-Mart, ArvinMeritor, Detroit Diesel and OTR-Canada
