Truckers plan to rally at Pennsylvania Capitol
03/28/2008 - 12:04:32 pm

Instead of calling for a shutdown as others have, truckers near Harrisburg, PA, are planning to stage a rally at the state Capitol to draw attention to high fuel prices and other issues affecting truckers.

OOIDA member Mark Kirsch of Myerstown, PA, told Land Line Magazine that truckers are planning to bobtail into Harrisburg, PA, on Monday, March 31.

Kirsch has had several planning sessions. The most recent on Saturday, March 22, drew 250 truckers to the Harrisburg Gables travel plaza at the Exit 77 interchange on Interstate 81. The planners moved the rally from the WilcoHess Travel Plaza to the Gables to accommodate the turnout.

“It went great,” Kirsch said.

Kirsch said the group wants to send a strong but peaceful message to state lawmakers regarding fuel prices – averaging $4.22 per gallon in Pennsylvania as of Monday, March 24, according to ProMiles – and other issues, such as tolling, that affect truckers’ bottom lines.

“We got a lot of signatures on a petition against the tolling of I-80,” he said.

The group is in the process of obtaining a police escort and places to park the trucks near the Capitol, he said.

“We want to do this the right way,” Kirsch said.

The next planning session is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at the Gables. Topics include last-minute preparation for the March 31 rally.

Kirsch said depending on how things go, the group may organize a similar trip to Washington, DC.
