Canacar sues U.S. government

The Mexican trucking association Canacar has made good on its threat and early this week filed a $6 billion lawsuit against the U.S. government.

Canacar is alleging the U.S. violated the provisions of NAFTA when it canceled the cross-border trucking program.

Mexico has since retaliated by imposing tariffs of 10 percent to 20 percent on many American goods.

DOT Secretary Ray LaHood’s plan for reopening the border to Mexican trucks is reportedly still being vetted by the White House. Two weeks ago, LaHood claimed the U.S. might reopen the border as early as this month – but many in Congress say that’s unrealistic.
