Truck driver Freddie Clay, 42, died Friday, May 25, after being pinned between his truck and a gate. The 42-year-old driver for James Devaney Fuel Co. and a trainee were delivering fuel to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Friday when the accident occurred. Clay had backed up to a gated area at the Quincy terminal. He and his trainee got out of the Volvo straight truck to open the gate and begin refueling operations. According to the transit police, the area is on an incline and the truck rolled back, pinning Clay. The trainee pulled the truck forward and called for help. Clay was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Transit police Deputy Chief Lewis Best said the initial investigation indicates that while the Maxi brake was not set, it appears to simply be an accident.
“We will certainly look at every aspect of this investigation,” Best said. “(But) we can rule out foul play.”
