Road safety inspectors will be paying more attention to oil field truckers

Although over-the-road truckers came out of this year’s RoadCheck safety blitz with near-record-low driver and truck out-of-service rates, truckers who haul in the oil and gas fields didn’t fare so well.

For the entire number of drivers and commercial vehicles inspected, the overall out-of-service rate was about 4.5 percent for drivers and nearly 21 percent for trucks. But in 10 states where inspectors checked oil and gas trucking operations, the out-of-service rates were nearly 7 percent for drivers and 28 percent for trucks.

Executive Director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Steve Keppler said this year’s inspections at oil and gas operations were prompted by concerns expressed by law enforcement members of CVSA about the safety condition of the drivers and the equipment operating around the oil fields.

“We did a special detail with 10 states,” said Keppler, “and granted it’s not a big number of inspections, but those that were done provided a potential indicator that we need to pay special attention to these folks.”
