Schneider National Inc., a premier provider of transportation, logistics and related services, was recognized today as a SmartWay Transport Charter Partner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled the Partnership and official SmartWay Transport Partnership logo this morning during a special ceremony at the American Trucking Association`s Legal and Regulatory Affairs breakfast in Washington, D.C. EPA Administrator Michael Leavitt presented Schneider National and 14 other charter partners with awards in recognition of their participation in the voluntary multi-national initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ground freight carriers.
SmartWay Charter Partners, including transportation carriers and shippers, have committed to work with the EPA to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save fuel and protect public health. By 2012, the Partnership aims to reduce as much as 18 million metric tons of carbon equivalent, and up to 200,000 tons of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) annually. These reductions will create fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of oil annually.
Schneider National used the EPA`s Freight Logistics Environmental and Energy Tracking (FLEET) Performance model to develop baseline environmental performance data for its fleet, determine current efficiency and quantify the environmental and cost-saving benefits of the various technologies and practices it employs. Schneider National recently installed in-cab parking heaters in all of its new tractors. The environmentally-friendly heaters are fuel efficient and produce significantly less pollution than an idling tractor. As a SmartWay Transport Partner, Schneider National is committed to improving the environmental performance of its fleet by one to two percent annually.
"Schneider National actively supports environmental programs to reduce emissions by specifying equipment that minimizes environmental impact. Driver programs support reduced idle time and improved fuel economy. Our idle times are among the lowest in the truckload industry, and we actively seek continuous improvement in this area," said Dennis Damman, director of engineering at Schneider National Inc. "As a responsible member of the communities in which we operate and as a desirable employer, we view the SmartWay Transport Partnership as an integral part of our operations."
SmartWay Transport Partners and EPA officials participated in a press conference following this morning`s ceremony. Max Pietsch, regional operations director, Schneider National, attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of Schneider National.
